During the coronavirus lockdown, Tom Walker has spoken to nine visually impaired people via Skype about how they are coping with the restrictions on their lives.
How would fully sighted parents go about home-teaching their blind son or daughter? Kate Clark from Cambridgeshire has risen to that challenge. Kate tells Tom about how she is making lessons accessible for her nine-year-old visually impaired daughter, Ellie.
Holly Scott-Gardner, originally from York, is working as a rehabilitation assistant intern for the Colorado Centre for the Blind. Holly tells Tom about how she is supporting those trainees who haven’t been able to return home.
Tom interviews Ultimate Radio presenters and listeners, about how the online radio station has responded to the lockdown. Predominantly staffed by blind and partially sighted presenters, the station has extended its broadcasting hours during the lockdown and provides its listeners with interaction and company.
Mike Brace, who lost his sight at the age of ten after a fireworks accident, shares his tips for surviving the lockdown. Mike also tells Tom about how he is supporting other visually impaired people to cope with a whole range of practical challenges.
Tom talks to Jane Vernon, a visually impaired woman from West London, about her concerns for her mental health and how she is coping with the restrictions.
Tom interviews England’s most decorated Blind footballer, Darren Harris, about his football career and a new ‘keep fit’ video he has launched recently.
The very sociable Graham Page from East London Tells Tom about how he is maintaining contact with friends, his love of food and provides advice on how to use technology to stay occupied.
Tom speaks to Anne Rigby from Chester about her experience of lockdown and the help she is receiving from the local community.
Holly Tuke from York works for a local college as an assistive technology advisor. Holly tells Tom about how she is continuing to work from home.
